...Threads...

Gabriel Dawe is an amazing artist. I'm a big fan of installation art, and though my penchant for wearing dark colours is well known, I love colour.

Gabriel was born in Mexico City, surrounded by colour and rich history. After working as a graphic designer, he moved to Montreal, Canada in 2000 following a desire to explore foreign land. In search for creative freedom he started experimenting and creating artwork, which eventually led him to explore textiles and embroidery—activities traditionally associated with women and which were forbidden for a boy growing up in Mexico.

His work is just so lovely. Simple and subtle in form, the depth he achieves with his use of colours and the build up of thread is phenomenal. I love the shapes he creates, and the way light can play on and through the piece.

...Exhibition Recycling Part 1...

So I graduated with a Diploma in Interior Design and Decoration this year from Design Centre Enmore. After 4 grueling years of part time study, it's strange and surreal to not have to rush home after work to do homework!
For our graduate piece, we held an exhibition in which we were each given a 1200x1200x2400 stand to decorate how we saw fit, paying mind to sustainability.
I'll post photos of my stand another time, but for now I need to get out an idea I've had to recycle my floor which I made out of old fence palings I purchased from Heritage Timbers.
My partner and I are looking to move in together next year, and both of us are on tight budgets with not much furniture. Light bulb moment - I'm turning my floor into a table!

I have the designs in my head, and will post progress shots etc, but for now here are some inspiration images I've found.

First up, my floor! Excuse the thongs.

...Shanghai Museum of Glass...

Shanghai has a campaign - become a globally important creative and cultural centre by opening 100 museums in a decade. So in pursuit of this campaign, last week saw the launch of the shiny new Museum of Glass.

German architectural firm, Logan, handled the architecture and exterior of the museum. Germany’s Glashütte Lambets supplied the enameled glass used for the museum’s façade inscribed with glass-industry terms in ten languages.

Coordination Asia was in charge of overall museum concept, art direction, design and supervision of the museum interior.

Coordination’s Tilman Thürmer tells TCH that they used black lacquered glass for the interior (cases, floor, furniture, walls), but left the existing structure untouched. The museum building is a former glassmaking workshop.

The black, sleek glass of the interior reflects the LED lights and screens positioned throughout the space, creating a shiny and glittering multi-dimensional feel. This emphasizes the interaction, interdependence and influences of periods, continents, materials and peoples involved in the art, craft and industry of glass.

The design of the space and exhibits and the use of various media help create an interactive and participatory museum experience where the visitor is directed through the story of glass.
